During the week, students under the aegis of their various Houses, competed in a number of sports including basketball, discus, football, handball, javelin, long jump, lawn and table tennis, shot put and volleyball. Various track events also provided avenues for the students to test their mettle against each other in the true spirit of sportsmanship. Board games were not left out as students went head-to-head in chess, draught, ludo, and scrabble too. In all, it was a week that offered the students the opportunity to put to use the state-of-the-art facilities provided by the school competitively. Judging by the cumulative points earned in the various sporting events throughout the inter-house sports competition, White House emerged the overall best House with a total of 139 points; while Blue House, Green House, and Red House placed second, third, and fourth respectively. THE THIRD EDITION OF ENGR. ATUME’S AWARD FOR LITERATURE
news
The Third Edition of Engr Atume’s Award for Literature Unique Secondary School is borne by an uncommon zeal in the founder and chairman of Unique Schools, Engr Felix Atume (FNSE, FAEng, mni) to “give back to the society”. Giving back to the society is an ideology that is upheld by the Chairman who believes that the sound academic quality and moral virtues in which he was trained should be passed to the younger generation. As a result, grooming the young people to maximize their potentials, become worthy ambassadors and leaders of the future society is prioritized in the school’s agenda. It is this dream that drives the chairman to set quality standards through numerous initiatives in Unique Secondary School. The initiatives are geared towards encouraging the students to work harder, ensuring outstanding acidemic performance and building the virtues of moral integrity which has almost disappeared from the character of the younger generation. One of such initiatives is Engr Atume’s Award for Literature. Presentation of Literary awards has been initiated by the Chairman in order to motivate reading activities in the school. The programme is meant to address the problem of nonchalant attitudes to reading. This is because the passion for reading books is declining speedily, especially in the contemporary times where the youths are preoccupied with movies and the internet through the television and android phones. It is hoped that this award winning endeavour would help to revive the reading culture which is fast eroding. The termly award for Literature encourages unique students to read literary books. For instance, the third edition of the presentation of award for literature which was held on the 9th of November, 2021 in the school was based on the reading and assessment of Elechi Amadi’s Concubine. It was based on the result of the assessment that the following students; Ortese Clementina of SSS 3, Andua Ufan of SSS 2 and Odey Winifred of SSS 3 emerged in the first, second and third positions respectively. These were the beneficiaries of the third edition of the Engr’s award for Literature. The initiative encourages a very healthy reading competition among the students as they strive for the awards. It would also go a long way to improve their reading skills, consciously or unconsciously. In the third edition, many reputable personalities were invited to participate in the presentation of the awards. Some of the guests include among others, the Head of English Department, Benue State University Makurdi, Professor Moses Tsenongu, the Director General of Radio Benue Corporation Makurdi, Dr. Charles Iornumbe and the Chairman of the Association of Nigerian Writers (ANA) Benue state chapter, Mr. Paul Ugah. Speaking at the event, Mr. Maik Ortserga who is the National Secretary for the Association of Nigerian Writer (ANA) stressed the importance of reading and also appreciated Unique Secondary School for embarking on this crucial endeavour. He went further to announce that Unique Secondary School has been chosen from Benue state by his association (ANA) to be a beneficiary of 40,000 books which the association will be distributing to forty schools across the country (Nigeria) in a bid to stir up reading habits in the students of secondary schools. Hence, the decision to partner with Unique Secondary School, Makurdi in order to compliment the ongoing reading campaign which is already ongoing in the school. In addition to this, Professor Tsenongu, who also brought gifts and a letter of encouragement from his department to the awardees, advised the students to embrace the reading culture and avail themselves to freely and fully participate in the reading exercise as the initiative is meant to enhance their intellectual development. Earlier in the opening remarks, the Principal of the school, Mr. Ortserga Sesugh Samuel and the Chairman Unique Schools, Engr. Felix Atume FNSE, FAEng, mni assured continuity of the initiative and solicited continued partnership among the various stake holders.
